When I think back to my teenage days, I can probably remember the feeling and the fear that everyone will think I am not cool or do not hang out with the coolest gang of my high school. That fear leads me to do a lot of stupid stuff that I might not do otherwise, from adopting a new lifestyle and clothing sense, whether it suits me or not, to deciding the future career pathway based on my friends’ preferences. It seems when I step into that teenage bubble, my parents’ approval starts mattering less, and friends’ approval starts counting more. Although it sounds weird and so reckless or rebellious to many of you, that was when only I could feel the fear of disapproval from my peers, which eventually led me to cave into peer pressure. Last week, one of my previous term students texted me to discuss her career aspirations. Students usually approach their tutors to discuss career and educational endeavours as they consider their teachers as their goal guides. However, when our discussion concluded, she complimented me as her mentor, and that was when I started reflecting on that comment and asked myself Am I a mentor or a coach to my student? I believe this question usually comes in our mind at least once in our lifetime that Role Model, Mentor, Coach, and Sponsor. What is the difference? Which do you need? Is it a single person or four different personalities? Which will help us to excel forward in our goals? Interestingly, each of them has a distinctive role that can help push our career and self-confidence differently.
According to Ruth Gotian, a keynote speaker and coach about optimising success, a Role Model is someone you look up to and respect. You may never meet the person, but there is something about them you wish to compete with. Perhaps it is how they have executive presence, public speaking skills, or the ability to connect with people. Consider who you watch on television, your favourite public speakers, people at work, in your family, community, or house of worship. What is it about them that you admire and respect? Some of the memorable times which I still remember are of my school and college days when I was free and different. I bet the majority of you all will feel the same whenever you rejoice your college days with your family and friends. Now the time is changed and so the priorities of our teens. The term ‘memorable’ might have a new meaning to most of our new generation. However, one thing is still a matter of concern to all teens is ‘what can I do after graduation? Surely, there are some pre-planners most significant who might have already decided everything about their future career and what they would like to reach in a year.
